Northern people heading south. Perceptions, identities, and integration of the Goths and Lombards in Italy in comparison
Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Laury Sarti
The project examines the migration and integration of two peoples into an existing society. It focuses on their perception in contemporary sources, the development and redefinition of their identities, and their gradual incorporation into social, political, and cultural structures. Both written and archaeological evidence are analysed to explore the interactions between self-perception and external perceptions, as well as the impact on existing power and social structures. The study considers factors such as religious affiliations, legal frameworks, social networks, and cultural expressions to understand how foreign groups were integrated into complex societies the new dynamics emerging as a result. Particular attention is given to the role of urban and rural spaces and to the political and social networks that facilitated integration and cultural exchange.
